PBS Biotech Accelerates Cell Therapy Development and Scale-Up
This case study describes how PBS Biotech collaborated with Rockwell Automation to improve cell therapy process development and reduce scale-up risk. The PBS MiniPRO™ Vertical-Wheel® Bioreactor System integrates PlantPAx® and FactoryTalk® software for automated control of critical process parameters across up to 24 independently controlled bioreactors. The platform supports parallel experimentation, standardized workflows, and manufacturing-relevant process data at development scale. As a predictive scale-down model of larger Vertical-Wheel® Bioreactors, MiniPRO supports continuity from process development through clinical and commercial manufacturing.
The PBS Closed-System Sampling Conical supports aseptic, representative sample collection from PBS Vertical-Wheel® Bioreactors while maintaining process integrity and sample quality. The single-use assembly combines a gamma-irradiated vented conical, integrated dip tube, and weldable tubing to reduce contamination risk, handling steps, and operator variability. Compatible with stem cells, immune cells, organoids, and aggregate cultures, it supports routine in-process analyses including cell counts, viability testing, metabolite monitoring, and aggregate characterization.
This flyer describes the PBS Biotech CDMO Partner Program, which provides flexible access to PBS-3 and MiniPRO Vertical-Wheel® Bioreactor systems through lease-to-own, installment, and on-demand acquisition models. The program helps CDMOs, CMOs, and process-development organizations expand cell therapy capabilities while reducing upfront capital requirements. Participants receive training, onboarding, technical support, and commercial collaboration opportunities. Program structures, deployment options, partner tiers, and qualification pathways are designed to support manufacturing capacity…
This publication characterizes aeration, oxygen transfer, mixing, and hydrodynamics in Vertical-Wheel™ Bioreactors using experimental measurements and computational fluid dynamics. The study evaluates oxygen mass transfer coefficients, velocity distributions, energy dissipation rates, shear profiles, and fluid flow under multiple operating conditions. Predictive models describe oxygen transport and mixing performance while assessing the effects of agitation. Results demonstrate efficient mixing and oxygen distribution while maintaining hydrodynamic conditions suitable for sensitive cell…
