Culture Inspired by Forward Thinking

PBS Biotech, Inc. makes the smallest, easiest to use, and most technologically advanced bioreactors for the pharmaceutical industry. The single-use bioreactors are fully scalable and applicable for any stage of the cell culture process… from R&D to clinical and to cGMP production. The company provides efficient, cost-effective disposable bioreactor systems and technical services to help customers solve complex cell culture challenges.

PBS Biotech was co-founded in 2007 by Dr. Brian Lee, a former bioprocess scientist of Amgen and Merck, and Dr. Gregory Zeikus, former CEO of the Michigan Biotech Institute and Professor of Michigan State University.

As biotechnologists, they recognized that the stainless steel and glass bioreactors currently in use throughout the industry would not efficiently or cost effectively meet emerging bio-manufacturing demands. Large, inflexible, and complex, these systems have a high cost of ownership and are hard to expand or modify when business or product requirements change. In the ever changing world of biotech… especially the rapidly growing biosimilars business, these inherent drawbacks make them liabilities, limiting a company’s ability to react and meet market needs.

Existing disposable bioreactors while focused on the right problem offer narrow product and process scalability as well as the efficiency necessary for broad range applications. Complex to learn and operate, existing bioreactors on the market offer unpredictable process scale-up and are packaged in disparate pieces.

As an end-user of bioreactors, Dr. Lee experienced the business and technical shortcomings of stainless steel and initial single-use bioreactor systems, and he decided a pioneering path was required.

Dr. Lee’s vision was to design a bioreactor that would:

  • Offer better mixing for cell culture applications
  • Be robust and fully scalable from lab to Production level
  • Have an intuitive, easy-to-use, and innovative user-interface design

The system also had to be:

  • Mobile
  • Modular
  • Have a Small Footprint
  • Be Economical

In essence… the system had to be plug and play.

It was clear a rapidly changing biotech industry was emerging… one eager to increase its operational flexibility, process efficiency, and reduce costs while accelerating time to market for new biological drugs.

Simply creating scaled down versions of massive stainless steel bioreactor units would not satisfy the critical user requirements. The development team at PBS Biotech designed a solution ideal for both scientific and business needs. At the heart of the PBS Biotech design is the pneumatic mixing system using a patented Air-Wheel™ mechanism that provides rapid, homogeneous, and uniquely low shear mixing of culture media and cells.

This dynamic Pneumatic Bioreactor System (PBS) enables broad process applications for producing:

  • Therapeutic Proteins
  • Monoclonal Antibodies (mAbs)
  • Viruses
  • Vaccines

Our PBS also opens the potential for new products including:

  • Stem Cells
  • Personalized Medicine
  • Biosimilars

Disposable vessels and bags are key elements of single-use bioreactors. PBS Biotech uses well-documented USP Class VI materials characterized to minimize concerns over leachable and extractable containments from product contact surface layers. These items are also designed with simplicity in mind. One person can quickly and easily be trained to handle and install the disposable unit in minutes, saving time and most importantly… cost. PBS Biotech manufactures its disposable bags in-house, maintaining strict quality control and flexibility, customizing solutions for customer-specific requirements.

The end result… a PBS product family that adds sustained value across the biotech enterprise. Tangible benefits include:

  • Rapid facility set-up and operation
  • Improved profit margins
  • Operational flexibility for producing existing and new biological drugs

The strength of PBS Biotech is our team of focused and dedicated professionals. The company employs a workforce with broad areas of expertise and skill. Scientists and engineers from leading biotech firms work alongside experienced product development, manufacturing, quality, and business team leaders. With this powerful organization, the next generation of single-use bioreactors was born.
